Second Meeting
Results and Conclusion

In this meeting we based the discussion on 3 figures (sended by the project team).
1. possible infrastructure,
2. Centralization / decentralization scenarios,
3. "switch services" The big picture, e-Academia
[1] --
The scenario with the possible infrastructure represent a toolbox for complete eLearning environments (including LMS, Repository and others).
The exchange of content between centralized and decentral structures can be realized on a national level. In this case institutions can simply outsource the related technical support (second level).(cfr. picture 2)
Related on this scenario it is necessary to set up a national service (helpdesk) composed and structured by a community of various expert groups. --
So local suppporters can revert to a national helpdesk (for technical but also didactical and organizational support) -

expert groups on a national level are available for institutions of higher education (specialized on complexe problems).

Local support for users (students, teachers) is organized locally by the institutions(specialised on practical problems)
--
new recognition in this context about LMS and repository:

most, but not every University and UAS had choosen their OS-LMS or repository. It could still be interesting to have a national LMS/repository service with hosting and support (also for economical reasons).

Institutions with the same type of OS-LMS (locally installed) can profit from this general service.

Furthermore the national service can coordinate releases, manage unsolved questions und participate at the official OS-LMS community.

Contribution Bruno W.

  • If we do not discuss a national platform anymore, we have to base our discussion on the assumption, that every school has its own platform or at least platform access. These platforms must be integrated in AAI.

So we do not need services which are standard e-learning platform services (document management, chat, discussion forums, calendar, and so on).

  • Instead, we need a repository for our e-learning units and media (text, images, videos, animations, etc.). The repository must support standards (such as SCORM). Even more important in my opinion is a directory. The directory must list the e-learning units which are stored in the repository. Furthermore, the directory must list the e-Learning units available on the distributed (and in AAI integrated) platforms of the various schools! The directory must be based on standards, too (e.g. Dublin Core)!

  • Additional services we need as users:

videoconference, SIP-based (SWITCH e-conf)

streaming services, SMIL-based, with support for mobile devices (SWITCH e-conf)

webcast services, Flash-based, (SWITCH e-conf)

With kind regards

Bruno W.
