Jumbled Sentence Test
Introduction
WebCTs Help for: Creating Jumbled Sentence Questions, German Version, French Version.
This page gives you access to an example of a Jumbled Sentence test, also called Scrambled Sentence test that lets you experience - in the role of the student - how such a test works in Vista with the aim to encourage you to develop a test version adapted to your course. You will also find a pedagogical reflection and a step by step instruction for setting up such a test in Vista. Further information concerning Jumbled Sentence Tests in Vista can be found in Part 4, Chapter 7, Sect: "Assessments and Assessment Manager", Sub-sect: "Creating or Editing Jumbled Sentence" in the Designers and Instructors Reference, WebCT Vista 4 (pdf, 2.5 MB) p 86. Usage Comments
Jumbled Sentence questions present a portion of a sentence and dropdown lists from which students must select the words that are missing from the sentence and put them in the correct order. They are designed to give students practice working with word order in sentences. The format is especially appropriate for language learning and allows students to manipulate the order of words in a sentence with single clicks. The student must recognize different kinds of words and phrases and make use of his knowledge of grammar and syntax in order to solve the problems.
If used to reconstruct a single sentence this text type can help train in language learning
- awareness for syntactical elements in the target language.
- translation skills if presented with the mother tongue sentence and the target langue words in one question. Example: Translate the following sentence into French: I love to work with WebCT! J'[aime] [travailler] [avec] [WebCT]!
If used to reconstruct a whole paragraph this text type can help train
- in language learning: the recognition of essential text construction elements in the target language.
- in technical subjects: it lifts the awareness for the logical steps of a process through the reconstruction of the scrambled text of a manual or instruction.
