Publishing Tests from Respondus QTI in Vista

Respondus is a tool for the creation and administration of questions and tests that might either be printed on paper or be published directly in a Learning Management System (LMS) such as WebCT CE, Vista, Moddle or others. Respondus especially supports the IMS QTI (Question and Test interoperability)-standard, which allows to exchange questions and test with other QTI-compatible applications.

This HOWTO describes the creation of questions and tests based on the IMS QTI 1.1+ standard that is supported by Respondus 2., and their publication in Vista. The same description will apply also to other platforms supporting the standard.

The main advantage of creating your tests and questions with Respondus and not directly in Vista are:

Creating questions and test
  1. Start Respondus
  2. Choose "IMS QTI 1.1+" when asked to set the Current Personality.

  3. Create a new file or open an existing Respondus file
  4. Edit the questions belonging to the test.

Creating IMS QTI File
To package the questions into a test create a ZIP-File that can be exported from Respondus and imported into other applications.

  1. Select the rider "Preview & Publish" and chose Save QTI XML-File.

  2. Clique "Browse", choose the folder and a name for your file.
  3. Don't use any non-ASCI-characters such as accents or diereses.
  4. Clique "Create File"
  5. A message confirms when the test is exported.
Control the zipped IMS QTI-file
  1. Open the Zip-file
  2. It must contain two xml-files

Importing the Test into Vista

In Vista, imported tests are added automatically to the Assessment-tool. The imported questions are automatically added to the Question Database.

  1. Import the Zip-File with "Content Import".
  2. Chose the uploaded file and click "Add Selected"

  3. While importing a progress bar is displayed
  4. When finished an import protocol is available.
  5. Click "back".
  6. Select "Assessment and chose the desired test from the list.

  7. The test is added and can be edited further.
