Most IT Projects Fail? Aral Balkan?s Memo to the CEO
Thu, 26 Apr 2007If more than half of IT projects fail, then we’re working in a domain where failure is the norm. What to do about it? In his engaging talk at Flash on the Beach in December 2006, Aral Balkan takes on the fundamental question: how do we reduce the risk involved in software development, or in other words: change happens, how do we deal with it? His advice for responding to change in a low risk manner involves adopting agile development processes, with a special emphasis on extreme programming and user-centered product development. A compelling message indeed…

LIFT Conference, Geneva, February 2007
Tue, 20 Mar 2007LIFT describes itself as a conference about the challenges and opportunities of technology in our society. I had the good fortune to be at LIFT in February 2007, the conference’s second edition. For this podcast, I asked some people for their impressions of LIFT, and if possible if they could sum up their experience in just 3 words…

Quigli.ch - online flash cards and more fun learning
Fri, 16 Feb 2007Quigli.ch is a web-based flash card application made by Rainer Steiger and Andreas Weber. It’s not your everyday flash card program though. Podcasting Professor - Robert Stidwill at Uni Zurich
Thu, 25 Jan 2007We’ve heard about podcasting in higher education, yet most examples are recordings of entire lectures made available later as a podcast (see for example our interview with David Malan of Harvard University). We got to talk to another breed of podcasting professor, Robert Stidwill of Zurich University, who has created custom podcasts for his Biology course for veterinary medicine students. Professor Stidwill’s students get a short audio presentation of topics that he chooses based on students’ reactions during class: a learning podcast ā la carte as it were.

What is eLearning Anyway?
Tue, 19 Dec 2006How would you define eLearning? To find out what the term eLearning means, my colleague Rolf and I did a little just-for-fun field research outside at the student café. Since we were in Fribourg we got a nice taste of the multilingual university culture, with a mix of French, German and Swiss German, as the students told us what eLearning means to them. An interesting bit of research indeed…

Learning Object Repository Feasibility Study
Wed, 22 Nov 2006The Swiss Virtual Campus, SWITCH and Edutech are looking at what’s called Learning Object Repositories and how they can be connected with Learning Management Systems. We had a conversation with our Edutech colleague Rolf Brugger, that points out in general what the idea behind a Learning Object Repository is, as well as some of the technical and practical considerations involved in implementing such a system.
We encourage members of Swiss higher education institutions (universities, universities of applied science) to contact us if you would like to test the prototypes with Moodle, OLAT or WebCT Vista.

David Malan - Podcasting at Harvard University Extension School
Tue, 07 Nov 2006David Malan teaches courses for Harvard University’s Extension School. The courses are offered to both local students who take the classes in Cambridge, as well as to distance learners the world over. In the academic year 2005-2006, Malan also made the course freely available as a podcast (not for credit). He talks with us about his experience with the podcasts, including what his expectations were, how students feel about the podcast, what is involved technically, the copyright question, and what the future might bring.
(This interview is a recording of a Skype call, please pardon the occasional funky quality.)

Richard Lucic and Zachery Pogue of Duke University
Thu, 28 Sep 2006Richard Lucic and Zachery Pogue, presenters at the Podcast Academy 2 in Boston in April 2006, took some time to talk about how they use audio in their teaching. They give examples of “audio reports” that students submitted, and discuss what is involved for them as teachers, as well as students’ reactions to using audio instead of writing a report and their positive reactions to the new challenge.
